What is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgical tools can access hard-to-reach areas of the body with astonishing precision. During robotic surgery, Dr. Hong controls the DaVinci™ system, a computer-guided robot equipped with miniscule surgical instruments, through tiny incisions in the treatment area. Robotic surgery can be used for tissue and organ removal as well as complex reconstructions of the anatomy.
Targeted Cancer Treatment
Dr. Hong most often employs robotic surgery in the treatment of cancer. Benefits of using robotic surgery in cancer treatment include:
- A shorter operation
- Minimized hospitalization
- Minimized recovery time
- Minimized risks
- Minimized discomfort
- Greater accuracy
Radical prostatectomy, or the removal of a cancerous prostate gland and the surrounding tissue, is one of the most effective ways to treat prostate cancer. Robotic surgery allows Dr. Hong to remove all cancerous tissue with less disruption to surrounding tissue, urethra, or nerves for erectile function.
Full or partial kidney removal (laparoscopic nephrectomy) can also be performed using the DaVinci™ robot. In contrast to traditional kidney removal, which requires a large incision in the abdomen, laparoscopic nephrectomy uses small incisions which decrease pain and speed recovery time. In select cases, Dr. Hong offers single incision laparoscopic nephrectomy which removes the kidney through the belly button, healing with no appreciable incision. Dr. Hong is proud to have performed the first single incision laparoscopic nephrectomy in Phoenix.
Minimally Invasive Treatment for Enlarged Prostate
Enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is extremely common, and affects at least half of men over 60. Doctors generally agree that transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which removes excess prostate tissue from an enlarged prostate gland, is the most effective treatment for the condition.
Dr. Hong offers several minimally invasive options for BPH. Greenlight XPS™ laser technology is a highly effective, minimally-invasive form of TURP which uses a high-powered laser to vaporizes excess prostate tissue endoscopically. This state-of-the art laser technology minimizes discomfort and associated risks, allows for a shorter recovery time, and reduces the need for catheterization. Dr. Hong is one of the few doctors in the country and world who offers Greenlight XPS™ treatment in his office, saving you the time and expense of a hospital visit. Other minimally invasive therapies for BPH include TUNA™ procedure, microwave thermotherapy, plasma or button TURP, holmium laser enucleation and others. Dr. Hong will tailor the correct treatment for your condition after careful consultation and consideration.
Kidney Stone Removal
Typically, kidney stones are naturally passed in the urine, but larger kidney stones or those causing urinary infections must be surgically removed. While most kidney stones can be treated with incision-less endoscopic surgery, the largest of kidney stones may require percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). During PCNL which is performed under general anesthesia, a tiny incision in your back above the kidney will be made to insert a tube directly into your kidney, removing the stones through the tube. If you have an unusually large kidney stone, Dr. Hong may need to first break it into smaller pieces using a laparoscopic probe. This minimally invasive approach offers reduced discomfort, a shorter hospital stay and recovery time, fewer risks, and higher success rate than open surgery.
Several conditions can result in changes in the internal anatomy of the urinary tract that cause symptoms. These include ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ obstruction), ureteral strictures or scar tissue and urological trauma. UPJ obstruction is a condition in younger patients that mimics symptoms of kidney stones and can be missed as a diagnosis. For UPJ obstruction and other related conditions, we offer a variety of techniques to repair the problem and preserve kidney function. These techniques include robotic pyeloplasty, or kidney reconstruction using the DaVinci™ robotic system, laser incision and other minimally invasive surgeries.
