Specialty Practice Areas
As an experienced and knowledgeable urologist, Dr. Hong is able to provide safe and aggressive treatment for cancers of the urinary system, including:
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life. Fortunately, it is also a highly treatable form of cancer, especially if is treated during early stages of development. Prostate cancer usually grows slowly and will initially be confined to the prostate gland before spreading to other parts of the body.
Bladder cancer may have no symptoms or more obvious symptoms, such as blood in the urine, frequent urge to urinate, pain when urinating, and back pain. It can be successfully treated, though it can also come back often. Patients with bladder cancer will need to schedule regular follow-ups to check for signs of recurrence.
While relatively rare overall, testicular cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among adolescent and young men. It is also one of the most curable cancers and can be detected during a self-examination.
Diagnoses of kidney cancer have been on the rise, especially with improvements in computed tomography (CT) scans and other imaging. Kidney cancer treatment has a high rate of success, especially if it is caught at an early stage. Symptoms of kidney cancer include blood in the urine, weight loss, back pain, fever, and ongoing fatigue.
Available Treatment Options
Our practice offers technologically advanced medical and surgical techniques, including:
This state-of-the-art technology allows Dr. Hong to take a minimally invasive approach to traditional major surgical procedures. By employing the precision of robotics, he can make smaller incisions and perform extremely precise movements with minimized risk. Dr. Hong employs robotic surgery for procedures such as radical prostatectomy (prostate removal) and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (partial kidney removal).
High-powered beams of radiation can be used to safely eliminate cancerous cells while preserving healthy, surrounding tissue. This therapy is often used to treat prostate and testicular cancer, as well as advanced forms of other cancers.
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
HIFU uses high-powered sound waves to kill cancerous cells selectively. HIFU can be an option to treat one part of an organ while sparing the rest, minimizing side effects such as erectile dysfunction for prostate cancer. HIFU has been used to treat prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. It has safely been used outside the United States for years and was recently FDA approved for prostate tissue treatment. However, specific approval for cancer is still pending and insurance coverage for HIFU may not be available for some time. Therefore, we only offer HIFU on a limited, individualized basis at this time.
Because some cancers such as prostate and kidney cancer develop so slowly, you may not need treatment for months or even years after your diagnosis. Some men never require treatment at all. If you have a small, slow-growing cancerous mass and are not experiencing symptoms, Dr. Hong may recommend scheduling regular tests to check on your condition without actively treating the tumor. This may allow you to maintain your quality of life while not reducing the length of your life.
We understand the weight and importance of the decisions made regarding your cancer treatment. Dr. Hong will always treat you as a person - not a set of symptoms - walking you through every step of your care and allowing you to take an active, informed role in your treatment.
